Build Your Own RISC-V Computer – KiCad PCB Design Workshop

About the training:

A hands-on, three-day workshop where participants design their own custom ESP32-C3 (RISC-V) development board from scratch in KiCad — schematic to layout to manufacturing order — and take home a real, working PCB they built themselves.

Prerequisites:

No electronics background needed. Basic familiarity with microcontrollers (GPIO, registers) is assumed.

Language: Slovenian (handbook and materials are in English)

When: 28.9.2026 – 30.9.2026

Three consecutive days, plus a short follow-up session a few weeks later once the manufactured boards arrive.

Approximate start and end time: 9:00–16:00, 5–6 hours/day (see draft agenda below)

Where:

Faculty of Computer and Information Science(UL FRI), 100 Ljubljana, Večna pot 113

Topics:
  • Day 1 – Schematic: USB-C input, ESD protection, LDO regulator, ESP32-C3 module, LEDs, buttons, GPIO breakout
  • Day 2 – Footprints, board outline, 4-layer stack-up, component placement, power/USB routing
  • Day 3 – Routing completion, DRC, manufacturing export (Gerbers/BOM), placing the fabrication order
  • Follow-up – a visit to Tasking d.o.o., where participants will see their boards go through SMT component placement, board pick-up, inspection, bring-up and first program

Three consecutive full days of guided, hands-on group design in KiCad (everyone designs together, step by step, live at a projector) ending with a real order placed with the PCB manufacturer.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course participants will:

  • Why USB D+/D− must be routed as a length-matched differential pair
  • How to read and fix ERC/DRC errors
