Upgrade of Nanoelectronics course at UNG

Study Program Physics and Astrophysics (1FAF) Faculty of Natural Sciences University of Nova Gorica

At the University of Nova Gorica, School of Science, the Master’s-level elective course Nanoelectronics (2FTS10) focuses primarily on the physics of nanostructured semiconductor electronic devices.

The course consists of lectures and a hands-on lab course, which was recently introduced instead of solving problems on the blackboard. The lab part offers students a hands-on approach to design, simulate, fabricate and measure nanodevices like e.g. graphene-based field-effect transistors.

The lectures cover the physics of quantum-confinement in semiconductor materials. The topics include the most relevant novel materials and their heterostructures, including 2D materials, quantum dots, quantum wires. More, lectures cover the physics of the nanoelectronic devices including single-electron transistors, 2D electron gas transistors, tunneling diodes, bulk heterojunction photovoltaics and novel photodetectors. The new hands-on part of the course objective is to transfer this knowledge into practice.

With the proposed update, the course aims to provide students with an attractive and practically useful educational experience that includes hands-on skills in the field of semiconductors and semiconductor technologies. Slovenia and the European Union have identified this field as one in which there is a critical shortage of experts. Due to the proposed changes, we believe that graduates who acquire the competencies introduced through this modification will have an advantage in the job market.
