Ugrade of integrated photonics course at UL FE

At the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Master’s-level elective course Photonics focuses primarily on integrated photonics.

The course consists of lectures and a hands-on lab course. The lab part of the course has recently been updated to emphasize an extensive hands‑on approach: students design, simulate, lay out, and measure a complete project involving their own photonic chip.

After an introductory module covering photonics fundamentals and tutorials on software tools, students can choose a topic and work independently on their project. At the end of the course, they submit their final chip designs, which are then fabricated at a commercial open‑access photonic foundry. The manufactured chip is later measured and analyzed together with the students, allowing them to evaluate the results of their own work.

The course provides a rare opportunity to design, fabricate, and characterize a real integrated photonic chip, while gaining practical skills that are valuable across a wide range of high‑tech fields.
